Petit Jean Mountain, Ark.— The University of Arkansas System’s Winthrop Rockefeller Institute (WRI) announced that it is the new location for the Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS). The AAS Station left Arkansas Tech University in Russellville after 38 years and relocated to the top of Petit Jean Mountain. in July.

The AAS-WRI Station is housed in the Education/Teaching Barn, a new facility built as part of the “Farmstead.” This demonstration farm, when completed, will be typical of a self-sufficient farm of the time period from 1933 to 1955.

The new quarters occupy parts of two floors. The first floor includes a lab and a curation space for artifact collections and site data. An office for the Station Archeologist in addition to a large multipurpose room for Station Assistants and administration are on the second floor.

The staff at the AAS-WRI Station include Dr. Leslie “Skip” Stewart-Abernathy, Station Archeologist, and Terry Johnson and Larry Porter, Station Assistants. Together, the three have over 50 years experience at Station operations. They are joined by Ameri-Corps archeology interns Leah Miles and Michael Young.

The AAS-WRI Station will maintain archeological records and research collections for 11 counties: Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Johnson, Logan, Perry, Pope, Scott, Stone, Van Buren & Yell.

According to the Arkansas Archeological Survey’s website, the organization’s mission is to “conserve and research the state’s heritage and communicate this information to the public.” The new AAS-WRI Station will continue its normal Station operations and work to support the education of the Rockefeller Institute.

“The Winthrop Rockefeller Institute’s emphasis on public education makes it the perfect venue for the Arkansas Archeology Survey,” said Stewart-Abernathy. “The Survey is looking forward to a promising, mutually beneficial relationship with our new host organization.”

The public is also welcome to visit the AAS-WRI Station Monday-Thursday between 9 am and 5 pm.
To learn more about the Arkansas Archeological Survey and the AAS-WRI Station, visit the Survey’s website at

Dardanelle Deer Hunt for the Non-Ambulatory

A Recreational Opportunity for Permanent Mobility Impaired Individuals

The Johnson County Waterfowl Rest Area Special Deer Hunt within the Lake Dardanelle WMA is to help improve the deer herd in this area through the provision of a recreational opportunity. This opportunity is being extended to a special group of the nation’s population that has a permanent physical condition that severely impairs their mobility. These individuals are fully capable of properly using a firearm to hunt game, but have restricted ability to access land for a quality hunting experience. This hunt is an effort to provide proper access, facilities, and other needed resources so these individuals can enjoy a safe and successful recreation experience as most other individuals in our nation. This special hunt will be held Nov. 3rd & 4th, 2007.

Special Hunt Application packets are available at the Clarksville-Johnson County Chamber of Commerce located at 101 N. Johnson St. in downtown Clarksville or you can give them a call at 479-754-2340.
