Arkansas Sparkles
With the 2004 Trail of Holiday Lights
|
Arkansas Department of
Parks and Tourism
The Natural State will sparkle
from border to border this holiday season as 70 communities
and two attractions take part in the 2004 Arkansas Trail of
Holiday Lights campaign, Nov. 17-Dec. 27. Those who are
joining for the first time include Springdale, Yellville,
Marshall, Crossett, Texarkana, Gurdon and Alma. Garvan
Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs is another new
participant.
Once again, towns around Arkansas will try to "outshine"
their neighbor by concocting innovative lighting displays,
both drive-through and static. Courthouses, town squares and
Main Streets will be outlined in lights as will community
Christmas trees and nighttime parades. Music, plays,
carriage rides, special shopping opportunities,
refreshments, open houses and a chance to visit with Santa
Claus are other holiday activities scheduled. Each city will
have activities unique to their event.
New to the lighting promotion this year is the Holiday
Giveaway. A gift basket from each of the six regions listed
in the brochure - Ozarks, Ouachitas, Central, Timberlands,
Delta and Arkansas River Valley - will be given away at the
end of the promotion. The baskets will include such items as
overnight stays, T-shirts, Christmas ornaments, posters,
cookbooks and other gifts. An entry form can be found on the
back of the 2004 Arkansas Trail of Holiday Lights brochure
or entries can be made online via the Arkansas Department of
Parks and Tourism's web site:
www.arkansas.com/things-to-do/trail-of-lights/contest.asp.
They must be received by Jan. 1, 2005 to be eligible; only
one entry, which must be filled out completely, per
household is allowed.
The Holiday Lights booklet will be included in the Arkansas
Vacation Planning Kit during the holiday season and can also
be obtained at the Arkansas Welcome Centers, Chamber of
Commerce offices of participating cities, the Governor's
Office, the Little Rock National Airport and Little Rock
Convention and Visitors Bureau's visitors centers, Shell
Superstops and Bank of America locations. The brochure can
be found in its entirety on
www.arkansas.com/special-promotions/.
This release, along
with others by the Department of Parks & Tourism, is
available electronically at the Department's on-line media
room: www.arkansas.com/media. Hundreds of high-resolution

America's
Legendary Drives:
Tour the most scenic drives in the country
Bridgestone
Americas Holding, Inc. www.bridgestoneamericas.com
Route 7, from
Hot Springs to Harrison, is a 160 mile stretch over wooded
hills and through mountain towns. The daylong trip begins in
Hot Springs, where President Bill Clinton grew up. Before
leaving Hot Springs, stop by the visitor's center for Hot
Springs National Park. Take Fountain Street to Hot Springs
Mountain Drive, which leads to Hot Springs Mountain Tower,
where you can take in a scenic overlook of the city and its
surroundings.
Head north out of town on Route 7 to the town of Mountain
Valley, home of Lake Ouachita State Park, where 975 miles of
shoreline are surrounded by 48,000 acres of parkland.
Continue north on Rte. 7 toward the 1.6 million-acre
Ouachita National Forest. A quick detour left on Rte. 298
offers the opportunity to tour the crystal mines. Return to
Rte. 7 to begin twisting and winding through the Ouachita
Mountains. Crossing the Fourche La Fave River, turn left
into Quarry Cove Park to see the 97 foot-high Nimrod Dam.
The dam stretches 1,012 feet across Nimrod Lake's eastern
shoreline. For additional views of the lake, continue the
uphill climb on Rte. 7.
Back on the road again, you'll proceed north through the
small town of Centerville. Sixteen miles east of
Centerville, on Rte. 154, is Petit Jean State Park, home of
95 foot-high Cedar Falls. Eight miles to the north of
Centerville is the historic Port of Dardanelle and Lake
Dardanelle State Park. The Ozark National Forest begins five
miles beyond Dover. The Booger Hollow Trading Post, nestled
in the forest features souvenirs, crafts and food. The 165
mile-long Ozark Highlands Trail begins just one mile outside
of the next town, Pelsor. Continue north on Rte. 7 through
Cowell, Jasper, and the Boston Mountains. Descending the
mountains takes you down to the Buffalo National River. Your
scenic drive ends as you reach the resort town of
Harrison.
Cedar Falls, Petit Jean

Amendment 2
What is Amendment 2? Proposed Amendment 2 to our state's
Constitution would give Arkansas a fighting chance to
compete with surrounding states for more and better-paying
jobs. When approved by voters in the November 2 general
election, Amendment 2 would give the General Assembly the
authority to issue general obligation bonds for the specific
purpose of attracting "super projects."
Amendment 2 does not raise taxes. It raises opportunities
for you.
