CENIC HIGHWAY DRIVING TOURS

FILL UP THE TANK AND
CHECK OUT THE VALLEY
ARKANSAS RIVER VALLEY TOURS begin
at three of our larger cities, taking north and
south directions off Interstate 40 or U.S. Hwy. 64,
the two east-west routes that run through our
region. Scenic highways, attractions and
great natural beauty are your rewards for
touring the Arkansas River
Valley
TOUR
ONE:
Starting
point for this tour is the college town of
Clarksville, with its beautiful University of
Ozarks campus and Walton Fine Arts Center.
Clarksville is also the capital of "Arkansas
Peach Country" and the site of the widely
popular Johnson County Peach Festival.
Take Hwy. 64 from Clarksville to Altus, an Arkansas
Wine Country community where you can enjoy free
tours and sample free tastings at
several wineries and vineyards. Take State Hwy. 309
South to Paris, a gateway to Scenic Byway 309 for a
24.9-mile drive to Mount Magazine
between Havana and Paris, the highest peak between
the Appalachians and Rockies. In Paris, the
handsome Logan County Courthouse
anchors a charming town square where a renovation
committee has launched a program to beautify the
square that includes period lighting, pedestrian
and bike trails and more. Nearby, the
Arkansas Historic Wine Museum at
Cowie Wine Cellars depicts the history of
winemaking the state.
Scenic Hwy. 22 from Paris takes you through
magnificent scenery to Subiaco Abbey and
Academy, where Benedictine monks have
merged centuries-old religious traditions with
modern educational methods. Highway 22 continues on
to Dardanelle.
Return to Ozark and I-40 via Hwy. 309, then take
I-40 east back to Clarksville. Then by all means
take Scenic Highway 21, a National Forest Scenic
Byway, north for great scenes of the Ozark National
Forest. Return to Clarksville by taking Highway 21
back to the city.
